A Mi-17 helicopter of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed 20 meters before landing at the Kedarnath helipad, on Tuesday morning.
“The helicopter was carrying three IAF crew members and four labourers. Just 20 meters before the helipad at Kedarnath, the Mi-17 helicopter, which was flying low, collided with a cable and crashed,” Rudraprayag Superintendent of Police (SP) Prahlad Meena said. All seven persons on board are safe, however, one crew member has received minor leg injury from the crash.
The helicopter was carrying construction material from Guptkashi to Kedarnath for the ongoing construction work at the Kedarpuri township which encompasses the Kedarnath shrine. While it takes about 10 minutes for a helicopter to fly between Guptkashi and Kedarnath, the narrow Kedarnath Valley makes flying through the Valley risky.
